AUGUST 2009
Shoes for Kids
What does a good pair of shoes for a child cost today? How much do we spend on shoes when we take our kids to a department store of sporting goods store? No matter where we go, shoes are expensive. Many kids in Carrollton and surrounding communities do not have good shoes for the start of school.
Saint Andrews Christian, First Christian, Trinity Valley Church, and other congregations join with Metrocrest Social Service to sponsor an annual event providing shoes for kids. Payless Shoes (Josey Lane @ 190) makes the event possible by providing shoes at reduced cost. Volunteers from churches go and help with selecting and fitting the kids with shoes.
Contact Martha Hoppe to sign up to help on Saturday morning, August 8, beginning at
8:00.

Answers to this month’s quiz:
"On the day I called, you answered me,
you increased my strength of soul.
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever...."
Psalm 138: 3, 8
It’s August! The month between what is firmly summer (July) and what feels like fall (September)…it’s a transition time when we start new routines and contemplate new goals. And yet it also is a beginning. This is a tall order for one month, and certainly lots of activity will be planned! May each of us hear anew from the Spirit of God within, knowing that He has a purpose for each of us in life and also in the immediacy of this layered month of August.
Looking forward to resuming Chancel Choir and Bell rehearsals after Labor Day! It’s always a welcome feeling to get back to what one loves after some time off. Many thanks to those who participate in music programs at SACC. The talents and time of individuals and families enable the music ministry to work. If you see any of the following people, give them a big hug and tell them “thanks!”: Jason and Tricia Whitler, Nancy and Russ Daniel, Randy and Anne Smithson, Erin Schafer, Lisa and Kenny Baker, Cindy Rowe, Sandra Ninemire, Jean Crover, Debbie Gondolf, and Robyn Gerko. I appreciate each of you so very much.
Here’s to stouthearted living as we enter a new season!
See you soon,
Lisa
Police Academy Alumni "Looking for Treasure"
You know the old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Let me give you a good example. Last fall, the Carrollton Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association began collecting old cell phones, laptop computers, Blackberries, and IPods. Why? To get money. They collected 150 used and broken pieces of equipment and received $161 in return for the benefit of the Carrollton Police Department. That's a reasonable return for little work. Soon you will notice a box at church for your donations to the program. Bring old cell phones and other small devices. Take out the battery and SIMM card, and we will do the rest. It's a good way to get rid of broken stuff that's just sitting around. Thanks, Cindy Whitten
Another Option -- Cell Phones for Soldiers
Maybe you have heard of this program created in 2004 by two teenagers. It’s easy to participate. Just donate your used cell phone by removing the sim card and placing the phone in the box in the Narthex. The Outreach Department will give the phones to AT&T who will then donate prepaid phone cards to soldiers around the globe.
Prayer Pals
Prayer Pals is a group that meets at the church on fourth Tuesdays to lift up and pray for concerns of those in the church, in our extended families, and others in the community. The meeting time from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. includes a sack lunch. The group is open to all who are interested. The next meeting is scheduled for August 25. "Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." Philippians 4: 6 (NRSV)

CROP Walk – Saturday, August 29
Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty
Everyone is aware that this year there is more poverty and hunger in our own communities and the world than ever before.
Addison, Carrollton, Coppell and Farmer Branch are Communities that will be Responding together to Overcome Poverty with CROP Walkers on Saturday, August 29th at 9:00 a.m. (Registration begins at 8:15 a.m.) Participants will meet at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 13605 Webb Chapel Road, Farmers Branch 75234 and walk 1 ¾ miles to raise awareness and funds to fight hunger around the world and here at home. The Walk will be easy-to-do with water and other support for comfort and safety provided.
Everyone can participate by either joining in on the Walk or making a donation through one of the Walkers who will be raising funds. Together we will be answering the important call to responding to help hungry people in our communities and all over the world. 25% of the funds raised will benefit the Food Pantry at Metrocrest Social Services, while the remaining funds will go to Church World Service, or one of the other approved international hunger-fighting agencies such as Heifer International that individual participants may designate.
Please help support CROP Walk 2009 by spreading the word at your church, community group or organization. It is easy and fun to form a team to walk together. For additional information, or to request a Walking Kit to begin collecting donations, contact one of the following:
Pastor Dennis Hamilton, Horizon Unitarian Universalist, (972) 492-4940
Pastor Randy Smithson, St. Andrews Christian Church, (972) 492-7531
Pastor Harold Elias-Perciful, First Christian Church, (972) 446-9808
Pastor Debra Loudin-McCann, St. Paul Lutheran Church, (972) 247-0083
In the last 20 years CROP Walks have raised over $264 million to assist those struggling to feed their families. We forget that hungry people in developing countries typically walk as much as six miles a day just to get food, water, and fuel, and to take their goods to market. The CROP Walk is a way to symbolically acknowledge their struggle and to take a stand against hunger in our world.

Come and Work at the Food Pantry
Martha Hoppe enjoys checking in the clients at the food pantry at Christian Community Action in Lewisville. She verifies each person’s registration and appointment time.
Every month on the fourth Thursday night, a team of SACC volunteers works at the food pantry. Jobs include checking out the shoppers, bagging the groceries, and replenishing the shelves. You can do it!
The food pantry operates with very low overhead cost because of the support of area churches, organizations, and volunteers. A two hour investment of time yields benefits for the pantry, the clients, and the one who serves. SACC has been serving at the pantry for several years, and we give thanks for the privilege of serving.
Youth Notes
The Youth Leader Team will meet at the church on Sunday, August 2, at 6:30 p.m. to continue evaluation and planning for the fall. The group will be working on the format of the Wednesday evening praise service and special events for Sunday nights.
Kids Kafe will start on September 9. From 35 to 50 students and adults are served a delicious meal as a part of the Wednesday evening activities. Workers who would like to volunteer should contact Anne Smithson. The work schedule is flexible, and you will be a great addition to the team.
